Check out the fantastic review written for Professor Rathus’s museum debut here!
@ UPFOR GALLERY, Portland, OR (Opening May 1st, 6pm)
Jordan Rathus brings from New York to Portland mementos from her travels to Panama and the Arctic Circle. Playing with false exoticism and the tourism industry’s infrastructure of mutual exploitation, Rathus takes the familiar and renders it perverse. Acting as both tourist and faux-documentarian, she creates absurdist travelogue videos that challenge the transparency of the genre. Her videos and photographic works offer a fresh and humor-filled deconstruction of realism.

Tiny Rothko in Outerspace on a Thursday
A multimedia, musical performance by Jordan Rathus and Andrew Adolphus. It incorporates live, multi-channel projections of video edited from a variety of sources ranging from intimate behind-the-scenes footage of Rathus on an surrealist game show set to Rathus and Adolphus’ concussion-themed home videos. Original, absurdist/existentialist rap lyrics are combined with elements such as found vinyl recordings of whale songs and soliloquies from avant-garde films, all together creating an alternative media hub of sorts, through which new and old audio-visual materials funnel and expand.
